1/3/2023 0 Comments Iaido dojos![]() ![]() This art form has been passed from teachers to students in an unbroken line over hundreds of years, so it is the responsibility of each practitioner to learn and practice the techniques correctly so that the tradition is preserved and can be passed on intact to the next generation. Iaido is not considered a sport, but rather an ancient traditional art based on a unique oral tradition for the development of mind, body, and spirit. Although the waza represent combative encounters, the deeper purposes of iaido are to develop mental discipline, awareness, and mental and physical harmony through practice and control of body and sword movements. Iaido consists of a number of techniques, or waza, that represent combative situations where generally one or more opponents initiate an attack. Iaido was practiced by the ancient Samurai for centuries. Please call or email prior to attending your 1st class to make sure there is an extra shinai available.Iaido, the Way of the Sword, is the art of drawing and using the traditional Japanese sword. Instructor must be notified at least the day before practice to bring a shinai if you are planning begin kendo. Shinai (bamboo sword) will be available for the cost of $25. Iaido forms (kata) are performed individually against one or more imaginary opponents.ĭue to COVID-19 no equipment may be borrowed. While new practitioners of Iaido may start learning with a wooden sword (bokken) depending on the teaching style of a particular instructor, most of the practitioners use the blunt edged sword, called iaito. Iaido is associated with the smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard or saya, striking or cutting an imaginary opponent, removing blood from the blade (chiburi), and then replacing the sword in the scabbard. Please contact the instructor before attending the first class so he knows to bring an extra shinai (bamboo sword). Kendo equipment consists of the swords, uniform and armor. The student progresses through a series of skills preparing them to begin training with armor (bogu). A new student begins with learning the basics such as: etiquette (reigi), different postures and footwork, and how to properly swing a sword. ![]() Kendo, like other martial arts requires discipline and a dedication to training. A Kendo practice is composed of many types of training. Students learn proper etiquette, safety, correct footwork, offensive techniques as well as defensive techniques. ![]()
